DESIGN 2
THE SECOND DESIGN
A SIGN AT AN EATERY
I feel as though this design is very important to diversity and inclusion, as well as communication. This is a sign for a café/eatery. What I did here was include an allergy warning sign of sorts, with the top being in English, and the bottom being in Spanish. The original felt crowded, even though it did have a café bakery background. Yet, I ultimately found it hard to read. So, what I did was basically strip the design background, put in a blurred café background, which I feel really added some elegance. In order to tell the difference, besides the languages, I went for keeping the yellow background on the Spanish language, so even without reading, people can tell it’s different right away. In terms of visual grammar and beginning conversations about signage, I really had to pay attention once again to White Space is Not Your Enemy, and when the writers stated, “Chances are, right now, you’re surrounded by the work of designers from fashion to furniture to architecture. There are interior designers and landscape designers, product designers and product packaging designers, and, of course, graphic designers. Believe it or not, there are even font and color designers” Simply put, I really had to put a lot of thought behind font, color, and ultimately how I was going to word such an important sign. These signs are lifesaving in a way, as they let you know what an eatery offers. They’re very important. When it comes to the design itself, the new one is on top, with the old one on bottom.
