DESIGN 4

THE FOURTH DESIGN

ISN’T IT IRONIC?

For this design experiment, we were asked to create a poster, so I decided to reflect on Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic.” This is truly one of my favorite songs, and I couldn’t imagine creating a poster for anything else, especially as this song conveys mental health so deeply and so honestly. The original design was good, but it definitely needed an update. I decided to make all the font the same, except for the word ironic itself, as I wanted that to stand out differently. Originally, that word was in a block font, but I decided to put it in a thinner font, space it out, and make it more impactful. Then with Alanis’ name, I kept it with the theme of a road, as life is a road, and she drives in a car in the video, so I wanted to stay to the original concepts of her video and song. Originally, the road background was also on a rainy day, but I decided to opt for a cracked road in the remodel, as life is full of cracks, but we can always pave our own way. It was very important to me to communicate double meaning in this design. In Chapter Eight of White Space is Not Your Enemy it is stated that, “The best designers are experts in type and typesetting because they understand that well-styled tone not only sets the document’s tone but also directly impacts its readability, legibility, and visual hierarchy.” Therefore, if I was going to make a design about mental health, I wanted it to be more accessible. I took out the slogan of sorts from the original design, as it was crowding the work, which was a major decision to be made. I wanted to become that expert at style in this design, or at least try. With the design, the original is on the left, with the new one on the right.
